Lessons from the First Lady

On my first day of PR school, I remember having to participate in about 100 ice breakers. First off, I hate ice breakers. They give me anxiety. I always sit there sweating it out while trying to think of something clever to say. On the other hand, the instructor gets to pick some question for their own amusement such as, Tell us something about yourself that no one else knows or What is the most interesting thing you've done, or What is your favourite ice cream flavour?

I always sit there wracking my brain while I categorize all of my life experiences.

Anyways, I remember receiving the ice breaker: If you could have lunch with any person who would it be and why?"

I chose Michelle Obama.

Although my answer to this question changes everyday--on that day I wanted to lunch with the first lady. If the kids and President Obama showed up I wouldn't be opposed. Besides having great arms,  intelligence and an actual sense of style Mrs. Obama also probably knows a thing or two about relationships.

“Cute’s good. But cute only lasts for so long, and then it’s, who are you as a person? Don’t look at the bankbook or the title. Look at the heart. Look at the soul...When you’re dating a man, you should always feel good...You shouldn’t be in a relationship with somebody who doesn’t make you completely happy and make you feel whole.” -Michelle Obama- Glamour Magazine 2009

Sometimes I read something (like the above quote) and it kind of sticks to my brain like unfloured pizza dough until I remember it again at a different point in time. I also think this quote applies to both genders. Just rearrange the words to suit your situation. The theme is universal.

So I dare to ask:

Are you in a relationship or dating someone that makes you feel oh so good or are you just fooling yourself? No need to answer but it does make you think. Hmm...

Mrs. Obama is such a wise woman! It's nice to see a woman with a brain running the White House

  4. Good insight Dave. I like receiving a male perspective. Notable: "i always say...do what makes you happy, and if ur not happy dont do it, theres no pt." Very true.

  5. Sometimes it's hard for people to feel worthy of such love. Thank goodness wisdom comes with age because in the end, we are worthy of feeling whole and completely happy!

  6. Obama knows her shit!

My man makes me feel SO good it's out of control. I'm bald and he still tells me I'm the most gorgeous thing he's seen. That's love. We got something real, but it does take work from both ends. Relationships are HARD, and that's why money and cute can only take you so far.

  7. That's amazing Claudia. You and your man are a prime example of rarity in a time when people are always moving on the the next thing, totally focused on the superficial and are too lazy to put in the hard work. If I had a glass of champagne (which I don't because i'm in class, oh how i wish i did) I would toast to you! lol A little cheese, but hey i'm in class learning about gov't affairs. And who doesn't love champagne?

  8. And a toast to you! I do love champagne. I think there are so many distractions out there today that it's hard to get blindsided. Looks, money, status, all those things are fleeting and easy. Real relationships are about committing to the fact that you're both going to be different people tomorrow, but you choose to grow together. He chose me, and despite how hard it can get, he's by my side regardless. I can't wait til we're married, I could just burst!
